John’s practice is focused on corporate, commercial and real estate law with extensive experience representing major local and North American financial institutions, commercial landlords, real estate developers, investors and agribusiness. John provides advice on acquisition, divestiture, land assembly, ownership structure, commercial leasing and financing. John has many years experience in providing advice on corporate governance, structure, re-organizations, mergers and shareholder disputes as well as extensive experience in not-for-profit corporations, foundations and trusts.

  • Presentations and seminars for professional and industry groups on various topics in business law and commercial real estate


Representative Work:

  • Agent and counsel to Toronto law firms for acquisition and continuing credit facilities for a major North American retailer
  • Acquisitions, Divestitures and Financing of large local Retail Centres, Apartment Complexes, Commercial Office Buildings including Winnipeg’s largest office tower
  • Developed corporate structure, governance processes, operational and approval procedures for an international Not For Profit organization with significant assets, and grant activity
  • Ongoing legal advice to Landlords and on occasion national Tenants on leasing for retail chains, fast food chains, anchor tenants, franchise tenants, home improvement chains and off-price chains
  • Agent and counsel to Toronto and New York law firms in securing substantial Manitoba assets under Security issued by an international industrial corporation
  • Agent and counsel in securing substantial Manitoba assets in the restructuring of secured debt of a national agribusiness corporation
  • Counsel to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers Football Club during the inception and construction of IG Field (formerly Investors Group Field)
  • Counsel to Valour FC member of the Canadian Premier League



  • Director, Officer and Fund-Raising Chair, Fish Futures Inc. – federally incorporated national award winning Not-For-Profit Sport and Conservation Organization
  • Former Hospital Foundation Board Member, Chair Planned Giving Committee and special projects
  • Participant in Not-For-Profit outdoor sport, civic, and charitable organizations
  • Founder and Chair of the annual Fish Winnipeg Corporate Challenge, providing funds for youth-at-risk fishing programs, fishing camps and rods and reels for over 500 kids each summer
